Overview
Finding specific books across thousands of library shelves is notoriously slow and tedious for readers. The Smart Library System is an IoT-assisted inventory and navigation platform that translates digital search queries into real-world optical guidance on physical bookshelves.
System Architecture
The solution integrates a dual-microcontroller topology communicating over a local serial bus:
1. ESP8266 Web & Inventory Server
- Web Application Host: Serves a complete, responsive book catalog search engine directly from internal flash using LittleFS.
- RESTful API: Supports CRUD operations for library administrators to add new books, assign shelf coordinates, and update borrowing status.
- WebSocket Protocol: Dispatches instantaneous illumination trigger packets to the shelf controller when a patron clicks "Find on Shelf".
2. Arduino & Actuation Controller
- WS2812B Addressable LED Strips: Installed along shelf bays. Each LED is individually mapped to a 3D coordinate (Row, Column, Depth). Triggering a book lights up a localized pulsing neon cyan beacon above the exact book spine.
- DFPlayer Mini MP3 Sound Module: Emits pleasant chime tones and synthesized spoken shelf aisle directions (e.g., "Aisle 3, Shelf B, Slot 14").
Key Innovations
- Eliminates manual search time by over 80% during peak library study hours.
- Self-contained offline architecture: The entire database and web portal run onboard without requiring an external internet server.
